How to disable new topics via Permission Sets

Permission Sets

This article describes how to disable posting of new topics or replies for an individual users, a group of users or a group of users within a specific forum.

The easiest way to do this is to create a new permission set that does not allow new topics.

Create a Permission Set

1. Visit the Admin CP, Locate and click "Manage Permissions" on the left
2. Enter a name for a new permission set for example "New Topics Disabled". Select the "Forum Member" option from the drop down list to base your new permission set off the "Forum Members" permission set.
3. Click Submit

Now the permission set has been created you will want to disable new topics in this permission set. Ensure the "Can Post New Topics?" option is set to "No" or disabled.

Save the permission set.

Associate the Permission Set

Now the permission set has been created you can associate this permission set with specific groups of users within specific forums or individual members.

Using the Permission Set Within a Specific Forum

To associate this permission set with a group of users within a specific forum from the Admin CP, click Manage Forums. To the right of each of your forums within the Admin CP you'll see a drop down list. When clicked you'll see a "Edit Permissions" option for the forum in the drop down list. This allows you to associate the permission set you've just created with a specific member group for this forum. You can see this below...

an

On the Edit Permissions page you will see a list of all member groups that have access to your forum and the ability to associate a specific permission set with a specific member group within this forum.

NOTE: The member groups shown on the Edit Permissions page relate to the users primary member group. For example if you assigned a specific permission set to say your "Moderators" member group from the Edit Permissions page for a particular forum this permission set would only be applied to users who's primary role is also set to "Moderators" within the forum you edited. This won't be applied to users who may belong to the Moderors member group as a secondary member group.

Associating the permission set with a specific user

If you wish to ensure an individual user can't create new topics within all forums you'll need to edit there profile via the Admin CP and associate the "New Topics Disabled" permission set you created earlier with the indivual user.

Associating the permission set to a group of users

If you want to disable posting of new topics within all forums for an entire user group simply associate the "New Topics Disabled" permission set created earlier with your desired member group. Then any users who have this member group as there primary member group won't be able to create new topics.
